By the way, do you also find it strange how much of a stink they're throwing over whether or not it was actually a tornado? I know a lot of people want to cover their asses over the sirens not going off, but it's ridiculous; every time I turn past the news it's, 'Was that -actually- a tornado??!?? We'll find out!!11!' You'd think there were some insurance clause BS behind it.
Thanks, if the path had been about a half-mile further west, my place would have taken the brunt of it.
Anyway, I'm not sure why it took them so long to admit that it was a tornado, considering the number of videos and pictures that were lighting up Twitter and Facebook yesterday showing an actual funnel on the ground. I think it has more to do with the fact that there hasn't been a tornado in Minneapolis since the early '80s and there was sort of an "OMG!!!WTF!" reaction.
I believe it was a case of wanting to be sure before sounding the sirens. The problem is we've gotten so used to hearing sirens in the summer that most people don't pay any attention to them. I also think that another contributing factor was that the conditions weren't exactly right for tornadoes, which caught everyone by surprise. I've heard that with the '81 tornado, the same thing happened—it was so fast that the sirens barely had time to sound before the tornado touched down.
